About Operational Electricity Generation Food Waste Covered Lagoon Scrubber-Integrated Biomethane Plant

This operational biomethane and power generation facility processes source-separated food waste using an engineered high-rate covered anaerobic lagoon. Solid food waste undergoes mechanical depackaging, size reduction, and slurry homogenization before being introduced via positive displacement pumps into the anaerobic basin. Digester flow dynamics operate on a continuous, plug-flow regime with internal hydraulic recirculation; localized submersible propeller mixers prevent crust formation, disperse volatile fatty acids, and enhance substrate-microbe contact without disrupting stratified sludge stabilization.

The lagoon operates within a controlled mesophilic thermal regime (38C40C), sustained through external shell-and-tube heat exchangers utilizing recirculated digestate. Raw biogasrich in methane and hydrogen sulfideis captured beneath a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) flexible geomembrane cover.

Energy recovery is twofold: raw gas is treated in a multi-stage chemical and biological scrubber train to remove $\text{H}_2\text{S}$, moisture, and $\text{CO}_2$, yielding pipeline-grade biomethane (up to 97% $\text{CH}_4$). Concurrently, a fraction of the scrubbed gas fuels an on-site combined heat and power (CHP) reciprocating engine, generating baseline electricity for grid export and parasitic facility loads, while recovering jacket water and exhaust heat to maintain digester process temperatures.
