This industrial-scale High-Solids Anaerobic Digestion (HSAD) facility processes solid dairy manure and bedding (2040% total solids) using modular, gas-tight concrete garage/tunnel fermenters operating in a dry-batch, pseudo-plug-flow regime.

### Digester Flow Dynamics & Mechanical Operation

Feeding is batch-operated via heavy-duty front-loaders loading stacked organic biomass mixed with structural bulking agents and mature digestate inoculum. Once sealed with hydraulic, gas-tight doors, internal mixing is entirely non-mechanical; instead, percolation pumps distribute warm, conditioned liquid digestate (percolate) through an overhead spray-nozzle header. This trickling action percolates gravity-driven through the porous solid substrate bed, maintaining optimal moisture, nutrient exchange, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) mass transfer without requiring mechanical agitators.

### Thermal Regime & Process Control

The system operates within the mesophilic (3740C) or thermophilic (5255C) thermal regime. Process heat is delivered through floor/wall-embedded hydronic heating loops and percolate heat exchangers, counteracting evaporative losses and ensuring thermal uniformity across staggered tunnel retention cycles (2128 days).

### Energy & Resource Recovery

Biogas is collected from the headspace, desulfurized via biological scrubbers, and dried before fueling a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine for baseload renewable electricity and parasitic process heat. Excess scrubbed biomethane can be upgraded to pipeline-quality RNG, while fully digested solid cake is separated into pathogen-free organic compost and soil amendments.
